Accomplishments and Current Tasks
The original task of the Science Advisory workgroup
was to create a list of bird at-risk species specifically for the state of
Nebraska. This list was created in Spring 2003, but has since expanded to become
the Bird Habitat Associations Matrix. This
matrix organizes all 363 species of birds that occur regularly in Nebraska by
the habitats and seasons in which they can be found here.
The habitat matrix was developed for the
purpose of evaluating the importance of each of Nebraska's major habitats to
breeding, migrating, and wintering birds. The matrix also provides a
"conservation status" ranking, as determined by the NPABC's Science Advisory
workgroup. In addition, trends from the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) routes are
shown, and reference numbers to the species accounts in "The Birds of North
America" series are listed. This matrix is now available on the
Resources page.

The Science Advisory Workgroup was also responsible for putting together
each of the fall Science Symposia for the NPABC. These symposia have now been
merged with the Rivers & Wildlife Celebration which NPABC now co-hosts with
Audubon Nebraska. The purpose of the Science Symposia was to bring in expert speakers on current issues in the field of bird
conversation, particularly with reference to Nebraska's habitats. In this way,
our partners may keep well informed of cutting edge research, ideas, and
techniques which may improve their effectiveness in applying bird conservation
strategies on the ground. These symposia also offer opportunities for partners
to interact directly with experts in the field of bird conservation, both
locally and nationally, and to share with one another their own experiences.
These objectives remain a vital part of the Rivers & Wildlife Celebration. Below is a list of the Science Symposia. Click on

on the "Archives" page.
