Conservation Strategies & Implementation Workgroup

The purpose of the Conservation Strategies & Implementation Workgroup (CSIW) is to provide guidance to the Partnership on the status of particular bird habitats in Nebraska and viable strategies for conserving them, and to set priorities among habitats, including focus areas for delivering integrated conservation projects.

The CSIW produced and compiled the NPABC Partner Resource Information surveys to produce the Partners Information Database. The database is an Access file compiled from 41 responses to the Partners Survey.  The database lists the organization type, regions and habitats worked with, types of work, species/guilds specialized in, expertise, and educational materials offered by each agency, as well as a list of the perceived education needs of the NPABC.  This database is very useful in coordinating Partnership tasks to the people and agencies able to accomplish them most effectively.  It also allows partners, as well as the public, to search for organizations able to provide them with specific resources or expertise to assist with their own conservation and education projects. It is available in both Access 97 and Access 2000 on the Resources page.

The CSIW is currently partnering with the Science Advisory Workgroup to implement the first practical use of the HABS model in Nebraska. The HABS model is a bird habitat associations matrix combining GIS technology with biological survey data to determine how many individuals of each species a given habitat type is able to support, and how changes in a given habitat will effect numbers of various avian species or guilds. This model is being developed by the Playa Lakes Joint Venture, with avian survey and habitat data provided by many of our partner organizations. Learn more about the model on the Library page.

Also in partnership with the SAW, The CSIW was assigned in March 06 to begin developing bird specific goals for the Nebraska Natural Legacy Plan, which was approved in fall 05. The HABS model, as well as the matrix developed by the SAW and current PIF goals, will likely be instrumental in this task.

Issue 10 - Implementation and Evaluation of NPABC Conservation Plan
with the Science Advisory and Capacity Building Workgroups and the Steering Committee
Issue 14 - NPABC Role in Audubon's Important Bird Areas Program (currently on hold)
Issue 15 - NPABC Role in HABS Model Development, Testing, and Implementation
with the Science Advisory Workgroup. Update June 2006
