Developed by the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) are planning units comprised of ecologically distinct regions with similar bird communities, habitats, and resource management issues.  Nebraska is represented by four BCRs, each with distinct priority species, population goals, and habitat objectives identified in the Nebraska Bird Conservation Plan.

Priority species are those species that are most in need of conservation attention.  The Partnership used an objective approach to identify priority species for each Nebraska Bird Conservation Region (BCR).  Developed by the North American Bird Conservation Initiative, BCRs are planning units comprised of ecologically distinct regions with similar bird communities, habitats, and resource management issues.  Nebraska is represented by four BCRs, each with distinct priority species, population goals, and habitat objectives identified in the Nebraska Bird Conservation Plan.

Nebraska priority species are a diverse list that includes species that remain relatively common in Nebraska but are experiencing long-term regional/continental population declines, and for which Nebraska is very important for conservation of the species (e.g. Greater Prairie-Chicken, Grasshopper Sparrow).  The list also reflects species that are relatively rare in Nebraska and therefore important for conservation of biodiversity at the state level, although they are more common elsewhere (e.g. Short-eared Owl, King Rail).  Finally, species that are rare throughout their range including Nebraska are represented (e.g. Whooping Crane, Interior Least Tern).
