The Great Plains Nature Center (Wichita, KS) has just released "A Pocket Guide to Great Plains Waterbirds". The pocket guide contains photos and brief descriptions of 40 species commonly found in the Great Plains region, including Nebraska. This "Pocket Guide to Great Plains Waterbirds" link will take you to the electronic version of the guide, where you can also find information about ordering a hard copy.
"Waterbirds" is a generalized term for non-waterfowl, non-shorebird, water-dependent birds including loons, pelicans, herons, egrets, cranes, gulls, terns, and others.
