Resources

This page contains downloadable resources that will be of use to NPABC Participants.  Currently available are the Partners Database and the Bird Habitat Associations Matrix.

The Partners Information Database is an Access file compiled from 41 responses to the Partners Survey that was distributed last year.  The database lists the organization type, regions and habitats worked with, types of work, species/guilds specialized in, expertise, and educational materials offered by each agency, as well as a list of the perceived education needs of the NPABC.  This database will be very useful in coordinating Partnership tasks to the people and agencies able to accomplish them most effectively.  It is available below in both Access 97 and Access 2000.  At this time, the 2000 version will not open automatically from the link, but must be downloaded onto your computer and opened with Access.

If your organization is not included in the database, and you would like it to be, please fill out the Partners Survey form below.  The form can be returned to Kelly Wells, Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, Wildlife Division, PO Box 30370, Lincoln, NE 68503-0370.

The Science Advisory Workgroup has constructed a Bird Habitat Associations Matrix for each of the 363 regularly occurring bird species in Nebraska, including the 72 birds on the Species at Risk list.  The habitat matrix was developed for the purpose of evaluating the importance of each of Nebraska's major habitats to breeding, migrating, and wintering birds.  The matrix also provides a "conservation status" ranking, as determined by the NPABC's Science Advisory workgroup.  In addition, trends from the Breeding Bird Survey (BBS) routes are shown, and reference numbers to the species accounts in "The Birds of North America" series are listed.  The matrix does have one limitation that users should be aware of. The spatial component of the matrix is still under development. As it stands, the matrix will list which species will occupy which habitats, and during which time of year. However, no distinction is made between eastern and western habitats in the actual matrix, so the "Bird List" worksheet must be consulted for this information. With this limitation in mind, the matrix is available below for download and use. The "Matrix Guide" is a pdf file with instructions for using the matrix, complete with a variety of examples. Both items are available to download by clicking the appropriate buttons below. Click here to send comments or questions concerning the matrix to the chairs of the Science Advisory Workgroup.  Bird Habitat Associations MatrixMatrix Guide

The manuscript "Habitat Associations of Nebraska Birds" by Paul Johnsgard and John Dinan, was recently published in the Nebraska Bird Review, which is the journal of the Nebraska Ornithologists' Union. This brief article provides background and explanation, along with some additional related information, to accompany the Bird Habitat Associations Matrix, and is quite helpful to read prior to using the matrix. It is available to download by clicking the button below.

Wildlife Habitat Registry: a meeting place for collaborative wildlife projects
The Wildlife Habitat Registry is a web based mapping tool providing an opportunity for users to document on-the-ground wildlife habitat projects. It provides a central clearing house or network for multiple potential partners to participate and leverage limited resources and budgets. The registry is sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, Geodata Services, and a collaborative group of 22 non-governmental wildlife conservation organizations, 4 federal agencies, 14 state wildlife agencies, and several Native American wildlife departments. This document provides information about the registry, including instructions on how to use the website.
