Tools & Resources
If you are aware of online tools or resources that may be
used for bird conservation planning or implementation, environmental
education (with a focus on birds and habitats), capacity building, or
birding; or have information on such resources that you would like to share
with those having an interest in the conservation of Nebraka's birds and
their habitats, please contribute them to this website by contacting the
webmaster.
This page serves as a source of information that may
be of interest to members of the NPABC. None of the articles below were
created by the NPABC. Inclusion of an article on this page does not imply
approval or endorsement by the NPABC. This link contains a virtual library of bird
monitoring publications, a centralized data management system for the
display and analysis of bird monitoring results, the draft register of
northeastern bird monitoring programs, and links to bird monitoring and
conservation information. Though information focuses on the northeastern
U.S., much of the information provided is of universal interest.
Rocky Mountain Bird Observatory (RMBO) is pleased to announce
the update of the Partners in Flight (PIF) Species Assessment Database
(version 2005), and the accompanying Partners in Flight Handbook
on Species Assessment. These materials replace the previous versions
released in 2001, and follow the criteria used in the North American
Landbird Conservation Plan (Rich et al. 2004).The database contains updated
biological assessment scores and related data for all landbirds in the
continental United States and Canada, at both the global scale and for Bird
Conservation Regions (BCRs). Updated scores were generated by the PIF
Science Committee through an objective, rule-driven process that gathers
complex biological data from a variety of sources and simplifies these into
easy-to-interpret numerical scores. These scores and supporting information
are maintained in a single location so that biological vulnerability and
conservation concern can be compared across a large array of species at one
time. The revised PIF Handbook on Species Assessment details the
scientific process behind each score and explains how PIF uses species
assessment in conservation planning at both global and regional scales.

PLJV Implementation Planning Guide The Playa Lakes Joint Venture is in the process of producing a Hierarchical All Bird Strategy Database (HABS model) for all of its jurisdiction (Bird Conservation Regions 18-19). The NPABC Science Advisory and Conservation Strategies and Implementation workgroups are working with PLJV to create a HABS model that can be used throughout Nebraska. This model, when completed, will be able to predict how many individuals of each bird species can be supported by each habitat type in each condition during each season. It will also be able to predict how changes in land management will effect bird populations, and can help to determine how to manage habitats in Nebraska to maximize avian diversity. Check out this guide, published in December 2004, to learn more about the PLJV plan and the HABS model. A newly formed
multi-agency group dealing with prescribed fire in Nebraska. Their website
(under construction) lists upcoming events and training opportunities.
Over the last year, a partnership has been formed that brings
together three leading raptor research organizations: HMANA, Hawk Mountain
Sanctuary Association (HMSA) and HawkWatch International (HWI). The goal of
the RPI is to determine annual population indices and trends of hawks
counted during spring and fall migrations at sites throughout the U.S.,
Canada, and Central America. More information, including a brochure and
project progress report, can be found at this website.
New online tool that allows members to create and
analyze surveys online. Lots of different question formats available. The
website hosts the surveys, so you only have to post or e-mail the link. The
website also collects the survey responses, analyzes the survey results, and
produces charts and graphs. It also allows you to view individual respones.
I haven't tried it myself, but it looks pretty useful.
This website sponsored by the USDA Forest Service
is a searchable archive of thousands of copyright-free wildlife, fish,
wildflower, and environmental education photographs.
