Audubon's
Issues and Actions
Read about current national and international environmental issues at Audubon's "Issues and Actions" website. Some of the
wetlands and other waters that are “isolated” from navigable waters are no
longer under the jurisdiction of the Clean Water Act as a result of a 2001
Supreme Court decision (Solid Waste Agency of Northern Cook County vs. U.S.
Army Corps of Engineers (SWANCC), 2001). NatureServe has recently completed
an assessment of the potential impacts of the SWANCC decision on the at-risk
species and communities that are associated with these isolated wetland
systems in all 50 U.S. states. The information and analyses contained in
this study are designed to assist policymakers and land managers at federal,
state, and local levels to better understand the biodiversity value of
isolated wetlands in their jurisdiction and plan for their protection.

The Wildlife
Management Institute's Testimony at the Endangered Species Act
hearing in the Senate Subcommittee on Fisheries, Wildlife, and Water
An editorial by Paul Beier, professor of conservation
biology at Northern Arizona University and Secretary of the
Society for Conservation Biology. This document was prepared by Bruce Morrison, Wildlife Disease
Section Chief for the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission. He attended the
annual meeting of the Waterbird Society which took place November 25-27 in
Tainan, Taiwan. The theme of the 2005 meeting was avian diseases and bird
migration, and the focus this year was on highly pathogenic avian influenza.
These are his notes from this conference.

Natural Resource
Amenities and Nebraska's Economy: Current Conditions, Challenges, and
Possibilities
A comprehensive study aimed at identifying ways that communities across the state can combine natural resources with the demand for outdoor activities to produce economic benefits in their areas. Published September 2006. Protecting the Sandhills Grasslands, Publicly or Privately
The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission unanimously passes a
resolution disassociating the agency from the Grassland Foundation's report
(bottom article in section). Article published in the Lincoln Journal Star
on May 26, 2006.
More details concerning the decision of the Nebraska Game and
Parks Commission's resolution to dissociate itself from the Grassland
Foundation Report. Article published in the Lincoln Journal Star on
May
23, 2006.
This article by Rob Ravenscroft of the Sandhills Task Force
makes the case that sandhills grasslands are best protected by supporting
the ranching families that are already managing the land in ways that are
beneficial to wildife, water, and eco-tourism as well as livestock
production. Ranching can be both an effective and economical way to protect
the invaluable natural resources of the sandhills grasslands. Printed in the
Omaha World Herald on November 3, 2005.
This article, which also comments on the economic benefits of
grassland protected areas, was published in the Lincoln Journal Star on
October 3, 2005. It also addresses the Grassland Foundation's involvement in
the Grasslands 2010 project. The Grassland Foundation's just released "Economic Benefits of
Grassland Protected Areas" report begins to make the case that Nebraska will
benefit economically from setting aside 10 percent of its remaining prairie
grasslands in large-scale conservation areas. The report states that rural
areas will benefit
economically from creating a network of large-scale grassland conservation
areas. The report makes seven key recommendations for change.
